“In the Croatian language “breza” is a word for “birch”. This tree is connected with me in many ways. Symbolically, the birch tree represents a new beginning and rebirth, a process that every handmade ceramic piece goes through – starting from an idea, through shaping clay by hand, and all the way to creating the final perfectly imperfect form. Birch wood inspires me with its tenderness and strength, colors and textures that are beautiful in all seasons. Thus, in the making of ceramics, I emphasize the tactile experience – using various textures, rustic clays and glazes, and organic forms. Clay, just as a tree, interacts with all four elements – earth, water, air and fire. By choosing the name Bréza, I pay hommage to this beautiful soul – the birch tree.”
